Schedule

Week 1

Objectives:

  1. Understand the components of a good speech

  2. Understand who you are as an individual

Day 1

  • Jot down the answers to a few questions in 2-3 sentences.

  • What is public speaking?

  • What is hard about public speaking?

  • Why do you want to do well in public speaking?

  • Self-record a 1-minute video, in which you introduce yourself to the group and share one thing few people know about you.

Day 2

  • Pick two speeches from the links below and write down two similarities and two differences between the two speeches. If you were to rate the two speeches (out of 10), how much score would you give to each of them?

Day 3

  • Think of 5 qualities (try to be specific) that a good speech embodies and jot them down

  • Spend 3-4 minutes skimming through the online article I attached below. Understand the criteria for the content and the delivery of a speech. Pick three particular points and write down why they make sense.

  • Pick out seven particular points from the article that you think are the most important components of a good speech, and jot them down.

Day 4

  • Spend a couple of minutes reviewing the seven points you collected yesterday.

  • Spend 6 minutes brainstorming 3 important incidents you experienced that have made a significant impact on your life. Why is that? Jot down a brief summary of the 3 incidents.

  • Spend 5 minutes brainstorming 4 qualities that characterize you. Is there any overlap between these qualities and the 3 events? Are you proud of these 4 qualities? Jot down the 4 qualities.

More detailed schedule calendar will be emailed upon joining.

  • 2020 Rotary Round 2 Speech Contest 1st Place Winner (Rotary District 7850)

Hi, y’all, my name is Jintao and I will be the mentor of this program. As a beginner in public speaking a couple of years ago, I too had stage fright and feared speaking in front of a lot of people. But now, as a public speaker and an actor, I thrive on stage. If I can do it, I don’t see why you can’t. This challenge will help you acknowledge your potential as a great public speaker and guide you to find your most comfortable way of delivering speeches.
